The xylophone is a unique instrument of the Taroko(Truku). It produces four musical notes: Re, Mi, Sol and La. It is constructed of wood with two parallel wood pieces as the base. It is struck with two wooden hammer-shaped sticks. It can be played using one or two hands. Men played this instrument with it resting on their legs while women played it in a kneeling position. This is not only a musical instrument but also a tool for transmitting messages, such as “I caught a rabbit” or “The food is ready, come quickly”.
