In the past, most indigenous men and women smoked pipes. Smoking a pipe was considered a social activity. Among the Paiwan, pipes were made by the men. Young males of the Paiwan with wood carving skills would give a pipe that they had made to a young woman that they hoped to court. The Atayal made the pipe bowl from the root part of bamboo. Among the Rukai and Paiwan, the pipe bowl was whittled from wood.
